HOW TO FIND SPECIFIC HERBAL INFORMATION:
Herbs are listed alphabetically by both trade name and scientific name. Clicking on a name will take you to a page which has a brief summary of the anesthetic concerns associated with the substance in question.

To get additional information on another substance, use the link at the bottom of each page (or the "BACK" button in your browser) to return to this index.

WHAT THE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM MEANS
Some of the herbal agents have a class listed. The American Herbal Products Association has developed a classification system for herbs which attempts to designate relative safety and potential toxicity. This system, while not accepted by all, is at least an attempt to understand the risks and quantify them appropriately.

  • Class 1: Can be safely consumed when used appropriately
  • Class 2: Restrictions apply as listed below...
    • 2a: For external use only
    • 2b: Not to be used during pregnancy
    • 2c: Not to be used while nursing
    • 2d: Other specific restrictions as noted for individual herb
  • Class 3: Significant data exists to recommend the following labeling: "To be used only under the supervision of an expert qualified in the appropriate use of this substance.: Labeling should also include proper use information, dosage, contraindications, potential advers effects and drug interactions as well as any other relevant information related to the safe use of the substance.
  • Class 4: Insufficient data exists for classification purposes.
