Online Childbirth Education Class: General Principles

Every class is based on certain principles. In fact, you can
say that every class has certain biases based on the beliefs of
those who are teaching it. So you know where I am coming from,
here are two general concepts that I believe in that will guide
the material I am presenting:
Everyone is different: I won't tell you that everyone
should have an epidural because I don't believe that. There are
many, many different options for dealing with pain - and anesthesia
is only one of them. What works for one person may not work for
you. What is needed for your mother or your friend may not be
what is needed for you. Each person is unique - and each labor
experience is unique. Therefore, what you do for pain may be
quite different than what anyone else does.
Informed consent is important: My bias is that a fully
informed patient is better than an uninformed one. I
firmly believe that this is the proper way to practice medicine.
In addition, there is evidence that someone who has had a chance
to think about all the options, risks, benefits, etc. and to
make an informed choice will be more satisfied than someone who
has not gone through this process. Information is important.
